I just learned that some people are crocheting their own crag dog chalk bags to use as treat holders when they go on walks with their pups! What a fantastic idea – I love the creativity in this community.

Tell me you watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine and know about Cheddar! There are lots of famous corgis out there but Cheddar has got to be my favorite – especially when he gets to participate in the yearly heist. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check him out here 🙂

Not a climber? Here are some ways you can still use this pattern:

-yarn ball cozy or yarn bowl

-plant pot cozy

-scrap yarn basket

-child’s purse

-dog treat bag

-Anything else you can think of!

GAUGE

4” by 4” square = 10 st by 9 rows of hdc with size H (5 mm) crochet hook and worsted weight yarn *achieving gauge is not necessary if you follow the directions for sizing your chalk bag base, below.

DIRECTIONS

BODY

Begin with your size H (5 mm) crochet hook and tan worsted weight yarn.

This piece is started in the round with joining and no turning. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.

(Wondering what the checkboxes are for? Check out this tutorial and make online patterns easier to follow!)

Magic Circle

From now you will be turning after each round, this is to ensure that the white streak on the face is even.

You will also be adding in colorwork to create the white streak on the corgi’s face. Color changes happen in the middle of the row in this pattern. The color changes are indicated in the written pattern by a new color abbreviation next to the number of stitches in that color; for example: t1, w2. t represents the tan background color and w represents the white accent color; the numbers refer to how many stitches you single crochet in that color.

Finish off and weave in ends.

SNOUT

The snout is worked in the round continuously without joining or turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and white worsted weight yarn.

Magic Circle

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Add your plastic safety nose now (or wait until the end and embroider one) to the tip of your snout where your original magic circle is; snout will be stuffed during the assembly stage.

EARS (MAKE 2)

The ears are worked in the round continuously without chaining, joining or turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and tan worsted weight yarn; you will also be using white worsted weight yarn. Color changes happen in the middle of the row in this pattern and will be indicated in the same way as above.

Magic Circle

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.

tongue

*Instead of a tongue you can embroider a classic “Y” shaped dog mouth under the nose with black scraps of worsted weight yarn.

The tongue is worked in a semi-circle round with turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and pink worsted weight yarn.

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing

BUNS (MAKE 2)

The buns are worked in the round continuously without chaining, joining or turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and white worsted weight yarn.

Magic Circle

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing, continue on to second bun. Once finished with second bun, do not finish off. Instead, single crochet the buns together over ten stitches, right sides together; the tail will lay over this join. Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.

TAIL

The tail is worked flat.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and tan worsted weight yarn.

ch 6

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

ASSEMBLY

When sewing amigurumi features onto a chalk bag, I find it very helpful to use straight pins to place everything before I begin sewing.

First, lightly stuff the snout and pin it two rows up from the bottom of the bag. Then secure the safety eyes one row above the snout and four rows under the upper rim of the bag. Finally, pin the ears at a 45-degree angle just under the upper rim of the bag.

After you have pinned everything to the face and are happy with how it looks, begin by sewing the snout in place. Keep stuffing the snout as you sew it closed until it is firmly stuffed. If you have crocheted a tongue for your pup then sew this on a few rows below the safety nose, hanging down. Sew the ears down along the bottom edge and secure the tops of the ears to the edge of the chalk bag so they do not sag. Finally sew the buns and tail securely centered on the backside of the chalk bag.

Attach your custom pet ID (pattern free with pdf purchase in my Etsy and Ravelry shops) and you are finished with the assembly!

  1. Hi,
I think a Chihuahua would be cute. I have a mini pinched and that may be cute also.
