HUSKY CRAG DOG CHALK BAG PATTERN

The perfect husky crag dog chalk bag to match your own furry friend!

I know how much climbers love their pups and I wanted to create a set of chalk bags that reflected all of those lovely crag dogs. Please comment below if you have a special breed suggestion!

I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, once again, for this #cragdogchalkbag pup. I love how many colorways there are available and how affordable the yarn is! To create the furry coat of the husky I used the loop stitch – it was my first time and I LOVE it!

I wanted to design a few crocheted dog tag options as well – including bone, heart, and paw shapes! You can find these in the paid versions of the pattern on Etsy and Ravelry.

HOT TIP: this husky makes a fine Malamute (or even wolf!) pup by just changing the eye color! Huskies often have eyes of two different colors, this is known as heterochromia, while Malamutes have dark brown eyes.

Not a climber? Here are some ways you can still use this pattern:

-yarn ball cozy or yarn bowl

-plant pot cozy

-scrap yarn basket

-child’s purse

-dog treat bag

-Anything else you can think of!

DIRECTIONS

BODY

Begin with your size H (5 mm) crochet hook and grey worsted weight yarn.

This piece is started in the round with joining and no turning. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.

Magic Circle

From now you will be alternating rounds of loop st (tutorial) and rounds of hdc and turning after each round. The type of stitch for each round will be indicated at the beginning round followed by brackets encasing the instructions for that round. Remember that the loop stitch forms on the wrong side of the work so you will be turning your chalk bag inside out at the end.

How to crochet the loop stitch.

You will also be adding in colorwork to create the white triangle coloring on the husky’s face. Color changes happen in the middle of the rows in this pattern – and because the loop stitches form on the wrong side you need to pay close attention to your color changes and make sure they do not show on the loop stitch side which will face out. The color changes are indicated in the written pattern by a new color abbreviation next to the number of stitches in that color; for example: g1, w2. g represents the grey background color and w represents the white accent color; the numbers refer to how many stitches you single crochet in that color.

Finish off and weave in ends.

SNOUT

The snout is worked in the round continuously without joining or turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and white worsted weight yarn.

Magic Circle

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Add your plastic safety nose now to the tip of your snout where your original magic circle is; snout will be stuffed during the assembly stage.

OUTER EAR (MAKE 2)

Inspired by Whistle and Ivy’s adorable animal ears headband patterns.

The ears are worked in the round continuously without joining or turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and grey worsted weight yarn.

Magic Circle

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.

inner EAR (MAKE 2)

The ears are worked in the round continuously without joining or turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and white worsted weight yarn.

Magic Circle

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.

EAR ASSEMBLY

Place the inner ear on top of the outer ear, wrong sides together. Using the long tail of the inner ear sew it in place and weave in end. Leave the outer ear tail for sewing to the chalk bag during assembly.

tongue

*Instead of a tongue you can embroider a classic “Y” shaped dog mouth under the nose with black scraps of worsted weight yarn.

The tongue is worked flat with turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and pink worsted weight yarn.

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing

EYEBROWS (MAKE 2)

The eyebrows are worked flat with turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and white worsted weight yarn.

EYEs (MAKE 2)

The eyes are worked in the round continuously without joining or turning.

Begin with your size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook and worsted weight yarn. For the classic heterochromia look found in huskies make one light blue and one brown.

Magic circle

Finish off and leave end long for sewing. You will push a safety eye (10 mm) through the center of the colored iris and use the safety eye to secure it to the chalk bag.

ASSEMBLY

When sewing amigurumi features onto a chalk bag, I find it very helpful to use straight pins to place everything before I begin sewing.

First, lightly stuff the snout and pin it near the bottom of the bag. Then secure the safety eyes, with their heterochromia iris’, one row above the snout and four rows under the upper rim of the bag. Pin the eyebrows above the eyes and move around until the expression is correct. Finally, pin the ears just under the upper rim of the bag.

After you have pinned everything to the face and are happy with how it looks, begin by sewing the snout in place. Keep stuffing the snout as you sew it closed until it is firmly stuffed. If you have crocheted a tongue for your pup then sew this on a few rows below the safety nose, hanging down.

Next, sew the eyebrows on just above the eyes, making sure they are a row or two below the upper rim – this is especially important if you plan on sewing in a fabric liner and need space for your machine on the top edge. Overlap the bottom edge of them with the eyes and tilt them up toward the middle of the face.

Finally, its time to secure the ears to the sides of the head two rows below the upper rim of the chalk bag – again, this is important if you plan on sewing a fabric liner. Begin by folding the ear in half and sewing two stitches through the half-way point and securing with a knot, this will give your ear a nice arch. Sew the bottom edge to the side of the head above and behind the eyes. Place a dart in the upper section of the ear, if needed, to hold it up on the head.

Attach your custom pet ID (pattern free with pdf purchase in my Etsy and Ravelry shops) and you are finished with the assembly!
