SNOWCAPPED MOUNTAIN BOOKEND PATTERN

Keep your books upright and your door from slamming with an adorable, weighted 3D prism-shaped crocheted mountain.

This little mountain top can stand alone as a piece of art in your home or double as a bookend/doorstop. Easy tapestry techniques will help you make the snowline and keep your crochet neat and tidy. Stuff it with decorative sand or anything heavy you can pad inside.

Mountains are my inspiration and muse. I love the scenery of the PNW, where I live, and my crochet is inspired by it. For this project I wanted to create a simple, but beautiful and functional piece of art. Something that was useful and that you would be proud to display. A mountain is such an iconic shape and there are so many ways to create one – I love the 3D bulk of this project and the heft the weighted bag gives it.

I used Lion Brand’s Pound of Love in Denim for the main mountain color and Red Heart’s With Love yarn in White for the snow. These two worsted weight yarn varieties are a favorite of mine – they both come with tons of yardage, and in every color you could want!

DESCRIPTION

This squishy and fun mountain is the perfect home decor for the mountain-lover in your life. It stands 9 inches tall and 9 inches wide. Constructed with 4 easy triangles, you’ll love how quick and easy this make is. I think a buffalo plaid version would be so cute!

MATERIALS

ABBREVIATIONS

  • ch: chain
  • st: stitch
  • sc: single crochet

GAUGE

4″ by 4″ square = 16 st by 18 rows of sc with size H (5 mm) crochet hook.

DIRECTIONS

Color changes happen in the middle of the rows in this pattern and all stitches are sc crochet. The color changes are indicated in the written pattern by a new color abbreviation next to the number of stitches in that color; for example: d1, s2. d represents the main mountain color in denim and s represents the snow color in the top of the mountain; and the numbers refer to how many stitches you single crochet in that color. It is also helpful to mark the right side of your work to keep your right side clean. Odd rows you will be working on the right side, even rows on the wrong side.

The video below of my #BLACKLIVESMATTER tapestry gives you an example of how to change colors in tapestry crochet.

SNOWCAPPED MOUNTAIN SIDE (MAKE 3)

d: Main Mountain Color (denim)
s: Snowcapped Color (white)

Chain 1 at the beginning of each row. [RS] = Right Side, [WS] = Wrong Side. Every wrong side row will begin and end with a single-crochet-two-together; for every right-side row you will single crochet across. For the final row you will single crochet three together (tutorial).

Begin with your mountain background yarn (denim) and a size H (5 mm) crochet hook.

Ch 37 (denim). ~8″

(Wondering what the checkboxes are for? Check out this tutorial and make online patterns easier to follow!)

Finish off and weave in ends.

Single crochet evenly around the perimeter of each mountain triangle, working two single crochets in each corner; matching background and snow yarn to their respective locations.

Block if your sides are curling too much.

MOUNTAIN BASE (MAKE 1)

Repeat steps for Snowcapped Mountain Side, as above, but leave out the white yarn and instead continue decreasing every other row with denim only, creating a solid denim triangle of the same size and shape. Make sure you also single crochet around the perimeter of this one. Leave a long (20″) tail for sewing.

If you’re interested in getting the stitch graph for this mountain, you can purchase the ad-free, printable PDF for $3.99 at Etsy or Ravelry!

Each square of the stitch graph is one single crochet stitch. On odd rows, you will be working on the right side, even rows on the wrong side. Odd rows you will also be working right to left on the stitch graph above and even rows you will be working left to right. Ignore the white background, you are creating a triangular-shaped panel using the mountain and snow color only.

ASSEMBLY

SEAMING

Lay the base right side down and arrange the three snowcapped mountain triangles, right side down, along each side of the base.

Using your long tail from the base, sew the lower edge of each snowcapped mountain triangle to the base triangle. This tutorial shows you the technique I used of sewing the 3rd loops together; it’s a sturdy stitch that will make your seams tight!

Using this technique, seam the three snowcapped mountainsides together inside out, but stop at the white sections. You will leave the top open so you can stuff the bookend and insert your weighted bag. Instructions below.

WEIGHTED BAG

You will need a weighted bag of sand weighing roughly 2.5 pounds that is small enough to fit inside your mountain with room for fiberfill stuffing to pad the sides. This will keep your books in place and your mountain upright.

You can DIY a bag by collecting your own fine sand and filling a large Ziploc with the sand. Or, you can purchase decorative sand at a store; JOANN has a 2-pound bag here and you can check your local hardware stores and dollar stores as well! I found my bag, above, at Walmart for $5.

FINISHING

Turn mountain right side out, stuff the corners with fiberfill, then insert your weighted bag. Continue stuffing fiberfill tightly around the bag, so it stays in place. Finish seaming the top of the mountain with white yarn; using the same technique as before may be difficult, as the prism is closed. You can use the mattress stitch instead. Stuff with fiberfill as you go. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Your mountain buddy is finished! Place next to a door to prevent banging or on your bookshelf to keep books upright. Or just proudly display your mountain on a shelf or coffee table.
