BLACK LIVES MATTER TAPESTRY SQUARE PATTERN

This week I dropped everything I was working on and focused on this pattern. I had been spinning my wheels and have been unable to form a thoughtful or coherent response to the recent abhorrent violence toward people of color, but I know how to crochet and I can help others through this craft that gives me so much peace.

I intend for this tapestry’s use to be open-ended; make a pillow with it, hang it on your wall, sew it to the back of a jacket, use it as a yarn bomb, hang it from your window.

I used Lion Brand’s Hand-Dyed Wool-Ease yarn in Lavender Honey for the main color and Red Heart’s with love yarn in black for the words.

DESCRIPTION

A simple response to the continuing unjust treatment of people of color. I matched the Black Lives Matter font on their social media graphics and encourage you to donate to them and other causes that support people of color locally or nationally.

This square comes out to ~12″ by 12″ with an added border. Tapestry crochet techniques are used throughout – Two Little Birds Patterns has a very helpful video on these techniques here; if you don’t know how to “yarn under” or “carry-through” then check it out!

MATERIALS

ABBREVIATIONS

  • ch: chain
  • st: stitch
  • sc: single crochet

GAUGE

4″ by 4″ square = 16 st by 18 rows of sc with size H (5 mm) crochet hook.

DIRECTIONS

Color changes happen in the middle of the rows in this pattern and all stitches are sc crochet. The color changes are indicated in the written pattern by a new color abbreviation next to the number of stitches in that color; for example: w1, b2. w represents the background color and b represents the black in the words and the numbers refer to how many stitches you single crochet in that color. It is also helpful to mark the right side of your work to keep your right side clean. Odd rows you will be working on the right side, even rows on the wrong side.

W: Main Color (background)
B: Contrasting Color (words)

Chain 1 at the beginning of each row. Each row will have 45 single crochet stitches in it. You will start carrying-through your contrasting color even though it is not used for eight rows; this is to ensure that the tapestry looks even throughout.

Ch 45 (main color only) ~11″

*Rows below were recently updated to alternate from right to left

Finish off and weave in ends. If you would like to add a border then only fasten off with your background color and continue crocheting with the contrasting yarn. Evenly crochet around the perimeter twice working three single crochets in each corner.

Each square of the stitch graph is one single crochet stitch. On odd rows, you will be working on the right side, even rows on the wrong side. Odd rows you will also be working right to left on the stitch graph above and even rows you will be working left to right.

If you find your tapestry curling then it is a good idea to block it so that it hangs or lays flat.
