ESCALANTE LACE WRAP PATTERN

Fun and colorful, but lightweight and elegant; this wrap will augment any outfit. Wear it over a fancy dress or throw it on a jean jacket. Versatile and beautiful, the Escalante Lace Wrap is always there when you need it.

I designed this lightweight wrap to be elegant, but still bright and fun. I was inspired by my Nana, who is always beautiful and elegant, but also spunky and the most cheerful person I know. I wanted a delicate wrap that could be dressed up or down; a piece of clothing that would go with everything, but also stand out in its simplicity and beauty.

During my hunt for the perfect stitches I found the twisted treble stitch (photo tutorial below) and thought it would be perfect. Easy to follow and quick to make, the “X’s” look like they are significantly more difficult than they are. I have never crocheted anything approaching a lace crochet pattern and wanted to ease into it with this wrap. I also wanted to use this gorgeous fingering weight yarn that my cousin picked up for me in Amsterdam. And thus, the Escalante Lace Wrap was born!

This was my first time working with fingering weight yarn and learning how to crochet with lace techniques. But do not be intimidated! The Escalante Lace Wrap is airy and works up more quickly than you would think. Plus, the lovely “X” shaped stitches are easy to get in a rhythm with and fun to work away the afternoon on.

DESCRIPTION

The Escalante Lace Wrap is a lightweight garment made with fingering weight merino wool yarn. The stitches are simple to learn, and the pattern is quick and easy. The completed wrap is asymmetrically shaped and ~30 inches wide and ~50 inches long. The triangular shape drapes effortlessly around your shoulders and allows you to wear it in many different ways and positions. To achieve the asymmetrical triangle shape you will increase, by two stitches, on one side only, which means increasing every other row. You will increase on every double crochet row and not on the “X” stitch row. Each “X” stitch row will be larger by one “X” than the previous row.

DIRECTIONS

This piece is worked flat and row stitch counts are in parentheses at the end of each row. I changed colors on row 63 and 88; using about half the yarn needed for rows 1-63 and the other half to finish the wrap (I kept enough of the first color to crochet the last row with). You will increase on each double crochet row by 2 stitches and each twisted stitch row (x st row) will have one more x than the last. Every x st row will start and end with a single treble crochet.

Below you will find a photo tutorial on how to crochet the “X” stitches for the “X” rows:

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until Row 87 (89 st).

Row 88 is the scalloped finishing edge to your wrap.

Note: If you would like a larger wrap, simply continue repeating rows 3 and 4 until you satisfied with the size.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Tie a knot in the longest end, if wanted, and throw your wrap on over your favorite dress or shirt. You are finished!

I modeled this wrap out in the desert heat and it was so lightweight and soft, I barely felt it!
