This climbing chalk bucket is inspired by my local evergreen forests and also upcycling blue jeans; is there a better combination? I don’t think so!
So far, I have mostly designed patterns for chalk bags that are meant to hang from your waist. But, that’s all about to change! Presenting: the Pocket Full Of Evergreens Chalk Bucket! A chalk bucket that was created with boulderers in mind- you know, the climbers who don’t use ropes. I, myself, have been bouldering much more since moving to Bellingham, and I love it, but I needed a chalk bucket to match this new hobby. This little chalk bucket has a sweet jean pocket for your phone and snacks, a velcro top to keep your loose chalk in check, and a beautiful color scheme to match our local PNW forests.
This Ferris Wheel Yarn from Lion Brand has quickly become my favorite ombre yarn! I love the color schemes it comes in and the seamless transitions. Its perfect as we move into fall and I especially love the ‘Evegreen’ colorway, it reminds me of the rich green of home in the Pacific Northwest.
Not a climber? Here are some ways you can still use this pattern:
-yarn ball cozy or yarn bowl
-plant pot cozy
-scrap yarn basket
-child’s purse
-dog treat bag
-Anything else you can think of!

DIRECTIONS
BUCKET
This piece is started in the round with joining and no turning. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.
It is possible to make this pattern with two strands of worsted weight yarn held double and a sized up hook. This will double the amount of yarn you use, but will also make a stiffer and sturdier chalk bucket. Just follow the same pattern and make sure your base is 6 inches wide and your height is 8 inches.
Magic Circle
(Wondering what the checkboxes are for? Check out this tutorial and make online patterns easier to follow!)
Finish off and weave in ends.
LOOPS (2)
You will create two loops to sew to the top edge that will help you open the chalk bag when it is Velcroed shut. These pieces are worked flat.
ch 4
Fasten off and leave ends long for sewing.
ASSEMBLY
Fold the loops in half and sew the upper loops near the center, but offset from each other so they can be easily pulled apart.
Measure the circumference of the base of your bucket and cut the boning down to this length, should be ~22 inches. Place the boning on the inside of the bucket along the base and whip stitch the boning in around the base using scrap yarn. A little dab of super glue doesn’t hurt to keep the ends in place.
Hand or machine sew the velcro around the rim, lined up with the upper loops. The rough side will span half of the chalk bag opening, and the soft side the other half. Make sure you do this step before sewing the pocket on!
Finally, sew your jean pocket on to the side of your chalk bag. Pin the pocket in place and use scrap yarn and a sharp curved needle for the tough jean material.
You are finished! Throw some chalk in your bucket and hit the gym or your local outdoor boulders.
