As a sci-fi geek (fun fact about me), I had to put my own spin on the whole fall pumpkin scene so I created this unique, starscape crocheted pumpkin design!
You can use any worsted weight yarn for this pattern, I loved finding some ombre yarn in my stash to use for this pattern; it gives the pumpkins a little bit of a nebula look. Black or midnight blue yarn work great as well!

DIRECTIONS
PUMPKINS
This pumpkin is worked flat, with turning. Pattern is for size small pumpkins, size large pumpkin stitch and row counts are listed in the parentheses.
Begin with your main yarn color
ch 22 (32) Leave a 15 inch yarn tail for sewing
(Wondering what the checkboxes are for? Check out this tutorial and make online patterns easier to follow!)
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until row 23 (33). Your finished small and large rectangle should be 5 in x 10 in, and 8 in x 13 in respectively.
The following instructions apply to both sizes:
Do not fasten off, fold rectangle in half (wrong side out) and slip stitch it closed into a tube. Now fasten off and leave a 10 inch tail for cinching the pumpkin closed.
Turn the tube right side out and cinch one end closed, pulling tight and securing with knot; weave in ends. Stuff your pumpkin firmly. Taking the other 15 inch yarn tail, fasten on to the open side and cinch this one closed as well. Finally, pull your tail through the pumpkin to the opposite end and secure there to create a shorter, squatter “donut” shaped pumpkin (this is optional).
STEM
There are many options for a stem. I am partial to the collected stick option, but you can always put in a cinnamon stick or even crochet a tiny stem out of contrasting colored yarn.
CONSTELLATIONS
Now for the fun part! Pick out a simple constellation (examples here) and get out your white yarn and embroidery floss and your finishing needle. Pick a side of your pumpkin and begin embroidering your stars on your pumpkin. First begin with the stars and designate them with a double knot in the white yarn, then pick out the connector lines in embroidery floss to make your constellation really stand out. Add more all around your pumpkin, or keep them on one side only!
Your Cosmic Pumpkin is complete! Make one or five and display them proudly!
