TWIN SISTERS BEANIE PATTERN

A lightweight wool beanie that is perfect for the autumn season; chevron shapes represent local mountain ranges and the ribbing keeps it comfy and cozy.

This beanie was inspired by our local mountains, the Twin Sisters. Mountains that I have now climbed and backpacked around numerous times. I love the beauty of where I live, and love to model my makes after natural scenery. That’s why it was a no-brainer to make this mountain beanie after our local Twin Sister mountain range. I am so happy with how it came out!

I brought my newly crocheted Twin Sisters Beanie up on our last climbing trip and it was so cozy and warm! Just the perfect weight for a mild summer evening in the mountains.

Getting a little time to crochet outside is one of my favorite things to do. I was happy to have some time down by the waterfront to sit in the sunshine and get my #WildYarning on for this pattern!

A perfect design for kicking back and staying warm on the beach.

The pattern calls for lightweight, category 3, wool yarn. I love this type of yarn for a beanie, because it is comfy and will keep you warm without causing you to overheat when you are out hiking or climbing. It’s perfect for layering under a hood or helmet and is so soft! Plus it looks just as good on men as women!

DESCRIPTION

This soft, chunky, and warm, but lightweight beanie is my favorite fall design yet! I love the ribbing detail makes it so stretchy and gives it such a comfy fit, which is achieved through alternating double crochet and back post double crochet. Plus it looks great on everyone – a wonderfully unisex design. I am especially enthralled with the geometric mountain motif and contrasting yarn colors. Tapestry techniques (use this helpful tutorial if you are new to tapestry crochet, just remember to keep tension on the carry through yarn loose so your hat is not too tight!) will help with sorting the color changes, though the back post double crochet stitches makes this style a little tricky!

MATERIALS

ABBREVIATIONS

  • ch: chain
  • st: stitch
  • dc: double crochet
  • bpdc: back post double crochet (tutorial)
  • fpdc: front post double crochet (tutorial)

SIZING

This hat comes in three sizes: youth large/adult small (head circumference: 19-20 inches), adult medium (head circumference: 21-22 inches), and adult large (head circumference: 23-24 inches). This design is very stretchy so if you want a tighter beanie I suggest you size down or at least size your hook down.

GAUGE

4″ x 4″ Square = 14 st x 10 rows on size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook in double crochet

This pattern is unisex and looks great on everyone!

DIRECTIONS

HAT TOP

This bag is worked in the round with joining. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.

Double crochet and back post double crochet rows are alternated to create the unique ribbing look. Each row will have dc or bpdc at the beginning to remind you of which row you are on except for the last two rows of each size which are the ribbing, alternating bpdc stitches with fpdc stitches.

Color changes happen in the middle of the rows in this pattern. The color changes are indicated in the written pattern by a new color abbreviation next to the number of stitches in that color; for example: g1, w2. G represents the mountain color and w represents the background color. Color graphs for each hat size can be found in the inexpensive premium PDF versions of the pattern on Etsy and Ravelry!

Look at that top-of-the-hat detail!

Begin with your background color yarn (w)
