MANATEE CHALK BAG PATTERN

This adorable manatee climbing chalk bag only uses half-double crochet and can be made in an afternoon! Celebrate summer days with this bright and fun chalk bag. Guaranteed to stand out in the gym or high up on the wall!

I had a request for a manatee shaped chalk bag, and how could I resist! Especially with this soft and lovely Lion Brand Jeans Yarn in Vintage that is perfect for the mottled, grey skin of a manatee.

Manatees, also known as sea cows (how cute), live in warm coastal waters and rivers munching on sea grass and mangrove leaves. Plus, their closest living relative are elephants!

DESCRIPTION

The finished chalk bag will be ~5 inches wide and ~5 inches tall. The chalk bag only uses half-double crochet (plus a little slip stitching) and simple techniques of increasing and decreasing to create the cute flippers, snout, tail, and eyebrows. The entire manatee can be made with one skein of Lion Brand Jeans Yarn; I chose the grey Vintage color, but mix it up and pick a bright, colorful one!

DIRECTIONS

BODY

Begin with your size H (5 mm) crochet hook and Lion Brand Jeans Yarn.

This piece is started in the round with joining and no turning. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.

Finish off and weave in ends.

SNOUT

After the first row, the snout will be worked in the round. In the first row, you will be crocheting all the way around your chain, on both sides, to create an oval. You will then continue to crochet around the oval without turning. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.

ch. 5

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew black nostrils on to the end of your snout with your black yarn scraps. Snout will be stuffed during assembly stage.

EYEBROWS (MAKE 2)

FLIPPERS (MAKE 2)

Magic Circle

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Flatten flippers, they will remain unstuffed.

Begin by sewing the snout near the bottom of the chalk bag with curve drooping down. Keep the heart shape while sewing and stuff firmly when you have nearly finished sewing.

Center the eyebrows and eyes above the snout and sew them on. Sew the chained side of the eyebrows to the bag and leave the crocheted side out.

Sew the flippers to either side of the chalk bag, near the snout, and angled back with the bend facing forward.

Finally, sew the tail on to the lower edge of the chalk bag directly opposite the snout.

Loop the yard of paracord through the weave of your chalk bag at the back and tie around your waist. Cut down to proper length.
