This pattern is special because I designed it for Hat Not Hate! Hat Not Hate is a wonderful way to support an amazing anti-bullying campaign and also burn through all of that blue yarn in your stash. Lion Brand launched the anti-bullying campaign in 2018 and it is going strong. They encourage people to make, wear, and post handmade blue hats, adding #HatNotHate when sharing on social platforms, because blue hats are the symbol in the “craftivist” movement to eradicate bullying. Are you ready to get involved? I sure am!
I wanted a nice lightweight beanie that I could wear while hiking and not overheat, but still keep my ears warm. The wool kept me warm and dry, even on a rainy day hike. The hat has a subtle heart shape made out of bobbles on either side and stretchy ribbing around the base. I left a pompom off of this beanie to better layer with it and wear it under my raincoat hood, but the choice is all yours!
This was my first time working with a hand-dyed natural fiber and I loved it! Natural fibers are a little more expensive than I can generally afford and they are not as accessible to recommend for my patterns.
However, this special skein was a gift and just the perfect shade of blue for a #hatnothate pattern (yes, I am a little late to the game, but it’s never the wrong time to talk about bullying!), so I caved and used it. Now I can’t get over the softy, silky feel of the yarn, and especially the earthy smell of the merino! While this special skein turned out perfectly, there are many, many options for more affordable yarn to use with the Heart to Heart Beanie. Any lightweight or DK sized yarn will create a lovely hat. Remember to make it blue and tell your friends why #hatnothate matters.

DESCRIPTION
The Heart to Heart Beanie is a lightweight beanie with a beautiful heart detail on each side made with specifically placed bobble stitches. The natural fibers with keep you warm and dry, while not overheating you. The pattern comes in adult small, medium, and large, and the paid versions include a stitch chart to assist with the heart motif. I found that blocking the hat really helped bring the heart shapes out and made them more symmetrical.

BRIM
This piece is worked flat. Once finished, check the brim against your own head. The fit should be snug, as the natural fiber has a lot of stretch.
Begin with your size G (4 mm) hook
ch 10
Size Adult Small (~130 yards):
Sc the two ends of the brim together. Do not fasten off.
Size Adult Medium (~150 yards):
Sc the two ends of the brim together. Do not fasten off.
Size Adult Large (~200 yards):
Sc the two ends of the brim together. Do not fasten off.
You will now turn and work across the top side of your brim and finish the main part of the beanie. Because bobble stitches form away from you, on the wrong side of your piece, make sure your seam is facing you as you work the beanie inside out. You will turn it back right-side out at the end.
This portion of the hat is worked in the round with joining. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round. Sizing listed in the pattern will be in S (M/L).
Switch to your size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
We will now be crocheting a heart shape made of bobble stitches on either side of the hat. The paid pdfs include a stitch chart for help with the heart shape. Make each stitch following the bobble stitches extra tight to give the bobbles a nice pop!
Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.
ASSEMBLY
Take the long yarn tail and use your yarn needle to weave it around the back loops of the stitches in the last row, then cinch it tightly closed. Reinforce the closure with a few knots and weave the end in on the inside. Turn hat right side out and you are all finished!
I found that blocking this hat helped keep the hearts symmetrical. It was my first time doing this process and was not as scary as I thought! I just wet the hat down, squeezed out excess water, placed it on a styrofoam mannequin head and pinned it in place. I let it dry overnight and the hat was ready to go the next day.Your hat is all finished! Wear it out or ship it off to Hat Not Hate and support their anti-bullying campaign, there are even cute #hatnothate tags you can sew on!
Your Heart to Heart Beanie is now finished! Take it outside and stay warm and dry while spreading the love around.
OR, mail it off to Hat Not Hate before September 1st:
