SERENITY BEANIE PATTERN

A chunky, easy to make beanie with options to finish with a bun opening or a delightful pompom. Which will you choose?

Jewel-toned beanies are so gorgeous! I love the stitch definition that this purple yarn gives to the berry cluster stitches. This hat can be finished as a bun beanie or regular beanie. Both versions are adorable.

This design is reminiscent of a bun hat I made while road tripping in our van for a year with my partner. I wanted something cozy, that I could pull on over my bun in the winter months when we were chasing the sun and looking for rock to climb.

I just loved the way this hat came out using Malabrigo’s bulky Mecha Yarn. You can use any category 5 chunky yarn to make this beanie; Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy is a great alternative and it makes EXCELLENT pom poms!

DESCRIPTION

This beanie is cozy and warm and can be created quickly with bulky yarn. It is crocheted bottom-up, starting with a flat-worked brim. The pattern comes in three sizes; youth large/adult small, adult medium, and adult large. And since not everyone wears a bun everyday (like me), there are options to finish the beanie with a hole for your bun, using an elastic hairband, or with a pompom!

I worked this beanie up with a couple of kitties on my lap 🙂

MATERIALS

Optional bun beanie finish:

  • Elastic hairband

ABBREVIATIONS

  • ch: chain

  • berry st: yarn over, insert hook, YO, pull through, YO pull through first loop on hook, YO, insert hook, YO, pull through, YO, pull through all five loops left on the hook. (tutorial)

BRIM

This piece is worked flat with turning. Once finished, check the brim against your own head. The fit should be snug, as the ribbing has a lot of stretch.

Begin with your size H (5 mm) crochet hook

Size Youth Large/Adult Small:

ch 8.

Sc the two ends of the brim together. Do not fasten off.

Size Adult Medium:

ch 10.

Sc the two ends of the brim together. Do not fasten off.

Size Adult Large:

ch 10.

Sc the two ends of the brim together. Do not fasten off.

You will now turn and work across the top edge of your brim and finish the main part of the beanie; make sure your seam is facing inward as you work so you will not see it once finished. Note: if you would like to fold your brim up you will need to put the seam on the opposite side and also add height to your main beanie section.

MAIN HAT

This portion of the hat is worked in the round with joining and no turning. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round. Stitch counts and rows listed in the pattern will be in S (M, L).

Begin with your size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing

Turn your hat inside out. With your sewing needle, thread the long tail through the back loops of the last row and pull tight to cinch closed. Tie off and weave in the ends. You are now ready to add your pompom!

Don’t have a pompom maker? Use this tutorial to make any size of pompom for any type of project. You can add pompoms to blankets, scarves, sweaters and more! Once your pompom is on you are ready for action!

  1. In doing the Serenity Beanie I found doing the Berry stitch per your pattern puts the bubble on the inside of the hat. Was a step missing?

    1. Hello Cathy, the whole hat is actually meant to be worked opposite of usual with the wrong side out. That is why the in between rows are flo and not blo. I should have made a note when sewing the brim together that the hat will be turned inside out – I will do so now. Thank you for the heads up!
