Since it is officially fall here in the Pacific Northwest, I have been lighting scented candles, listening to the rain fall, and watching The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch while I crochet on the couch with my cats next to me. All of this has inspired me to make a black cat earwarmer pattern, just in time for fall!
I just love how these three little cat heads came out! The contast with the green tweed yarn and black yarn is perfect. I am newer to tapestry crochet, so this was a fun way to dip my toe in the water – I can see many more projects in my future using this technique though! Once you get the hang of it, its a breeze and so fun to create pictures in yarn, like these kitties.

DESCRIPTION
Show off your love of kitties, Sabrina, or fall with this unique and adorable head warmer. The tapered ends connect with a button, and the wide top keeps your head and ears warm, while allowing you to wear a ponytail or bun. Tapestry techniques (use this helpful tutorial if you are new to tapestry crochet, just remember to keep even tension on the carry through yarn) will help with sorting the color changes and keep you organized. This is a very quick make; you’ll be wearing your Salem Earwarmer by the end of the afternoon!

DIRECTIONS
EAR WARMER
This ear warmer is worked flat, from one tapered end to the other. You will create a shorter or longer tapered section depending on what size you crochet. The cat section will be the same for all of the sizes. Stitch and row counts are listed in the parentheses from youth large/adult small, adult medium, adult large.
TAPERED SECTION
Begin with green yarn

CAT SECTION
Color graphs for each hat size can be found in the inexpensive premium PDF versions of the pattern on Etsy and Ravelry!
Continue working flat with turning. This section is crocheted in the tapestry style, changing yarn colors frequently to create the three black cat heads motif. Color changes happen in the middle of the rows in this pattern and all stitches are sc crochet. The color changes are indicated in the written pattern by a new color abbreviation next to the number of stitches in that color; for example: g1, b2. g represents the green background color and b represents the black of the cat head and the numbers refer to how many stitches you single crochet in that color. It is also helpful to mark your right and wrong sides to keep your right side clean. The first row in this section you will be working on the right side, and they will alternate after this.
TAPERED SECTION
Do not finish off, you will now begin crocheting around the entire headband in green to create a border.
Chain one and evenly single crochet around the perimeter of the earwarmer twice, working three single crochets in each corner of the tapered ends.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Block your earwarmer, if needed, and sew on your button on to the right side of the earwarmer. Push the button through the weave of the other tapered end or crochet a short chain to loop around the button. I am so thrilled to finally use this cat head button I found at a thrift shop, its the perfect button for this project! (I found a similar cat head button on Amazon HERE)
Your Salem Earwarmer is complete! Get outside and stay warm!
