MAZAMA MOUNTAIN GOAT CHALK BAG PATTERN

Mazama the Mountain Goat is ready for all your rock climbing needs! Make her in an afternoon and get out rock climbing! Everyone will wonder where you got such a precious chalk bag.

This little chalk bag is crocheted with acrylic yarn that has been brushed to create a fuzzy coat of fur. This quick pattern will remind you of the mountains and get you out climbing as soon as possible! Mountain goats are the cutest, so who doesn’t want one swinging from their harness?

This past month we have been seeing mountain goats everywhere! They have been around on all of our recent climbing and backpacking adventures, and last weekend we even saw a momma and a baby goat – talk about precious!

Check out the little baby mountain goat we saw on our rock climb at Washington Pass last weekend!

I had been planning on designing a mountain goat chalk bag pattern for quite awhile, but it was obvious to me it had to happen now! How could I not be inspired by these beautiful (and shaggy) creatures we’ve been seeing on our adventures. As you can see in my design below, I added a nice little goat beard and cute little horns – just like the real-life inspiration above.

Not a climber? Here are some ways you can still use this pattern:

-yarn ball cozy or yarn bowl

-plant pot cozy

-scrap yarn basket

-child’s purse

-dog treat bag

-Anything else you can think of!

DESCRIPTION

The finished chalk bag will be ~5 inches wide and ~5 inches tall. The main part of the chalk bag uses half-double crochet and the yarn is brushed to give her coat a woolly look. The little horns are stuffed with fiberfill and the nose and mouth are embroidered on. I used realistic safety eyes, but you can use googly eyes or even embroider yours on!

ASSEMBLY

Fur: Take a small brush (wire works best) and lightly brush the outside of the chalk bag and in all directions. Keep brushing until your goat is as fuzzy as you would like and there are no flat patches.

Ears: Fold the base of the ears in half and sew together. Sew on the ears, angled downward, high on each side of the chalk bag.

Horns: Fold the horns in half and using leftover grey yarn, secure the fold with a few short stitches. This will hold the horn in a curved shape. Sew on the horns just in front of the ears and pointed upward.

Eyes: Sew the eyes, an inch and a half apart, between the horns.

Nose/Mouth: Embroider the nose and mouth on the lower half of the bag, under the eyes.

Goat Beard: Cut about 12 lengths of yarn that are 6 inches long. Fold them in half and tie them to the bottom edge of the chalk bag, under the nose and mouth in two rows. Trim the beard to your liking and brush it to fluff it out.

Loop the yard of paracord through the weave of your chalk bag at the back and tie around your waist. Cut down to proper length.

Your chalk bag is complete! Get out and climb!
