Spring has long sprung and it is the season of farmers markets and fresh veggies. I have been wanting to design a market bag for quite some time, but was not inspired enough until I had the idea to make one that stuffs into it’s own adorable drawstring bag. Now I can store the whole thing in my purse, backpack, or car and always have it at the ready! Plus the drawstring bag has a few colorful options – there’s something for everyone!
Getting a little time to crochet outside is one of my favorite things to do. I was happy to have some time down by the waterfront to sit in the sunshine and get my #WildYarning on for this pattern!
The environmentalist in me was so excited when Lion Brand Yarn came out with their new eco-friendly recycled cotton yarn, Re-Up. This yarn is 85% recycled cotton and 15% polyester. Using just one skein of Re-up Yarn saves 5,900 cups of water!

DESCRIPTION
This market bag is worked in the round, beginning with a solid base and them moving into a mesh bag and ending with handles. The bag is approximately 14 inches wide by 14 inches tall. The colorful drawstring bag is made separately and sewn onto the corner of the market bag. It has a drawstring so you can stuff your market bag into its own adorable watermelon, lemon slice, or carrot drawstring bag when not in use. And when it is in use, the drawstring bag sits out of the way on the corner of the market bag!

MESH BEGINS
This section is worked in the round continuously, without joining.
TOP EDGE AND HANDLES
This section is worked in the round with joining; you will begin each row with a chain and end it by slip stitching to the first stitch. Begin from your last stitch in the mesh row that should have ended along one side of the bag, above your stitch marker. Move your stitch marker to your current stitch.
Note: In Row 21, the “ch 60” is what creates the straps, which are 20 in/51 cm. If you want longer or shorter straps, add or subtract chain stitches in this step.
Fasten off and weave in ends. The mesh market bag is finished!
WATERMELON DRAWSTRING BAG
This bag is worked in the round. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.
Begin with Raspberry yarn
Magic Circle, leave tail long for sewing
Switch to Ecru yarn
Switch to Lime yarn
Fasten off and leave ends long for sewing.
DRAWSTRING
Using Lime yarn, chain a length 20 inches long. Thread this chain through the second to last row of the watermelon bag to create the drawstring.
SEEDS
Take short lengths of Ecru yarn and tie them with double knots all around the watermelon bag. Cut them short and allow the ends to fray out.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE ACCESS TO THE CARROT AND LEMON SLICE DRAWSTRING BAG OPTIONS PLEASE PURCHASE THE PATTERN ON ETSY OR RAVELRY.
ASSEMBLY
You will now sew on your watermelon drawstring bag to the corner of your market bag.
Start by turning your drawstring bag inside out and tucking the corner of the market mesh bag inside the corner of the drawstring bag. Sew the two corners together with yarn corresponding to the color of your drawstring bag.
Next, sew the base of the mesh bag to the edge of the drawstring bag using yarn scraps of the corresponding color. Taking another length of yarn, securely sew the drawstring bag to the other side of the mesh bag. Now you won’t lose the drawstring bag when your market bag is full of goodies!
Your Pop-out Market Bag is all finished! Tuck it into your purse and always have an adorable and re-usable bag along with you!
