WATERMELON BEACH BAG PATTERN

This bright and roomy watermelon beach bag is coming everywhere with me this summer and may just be the perfect summer project bag – it can hold so. much. yarn.

Beach season is here and I don’t know about you, but I am ready! I love packing a bag for an afternoon on the beach and I designed this bag just for that purpose. I love the bobble texture on the front and especially the nice, thick comfy handles.

The environmentalist in me was so excited when Lion Brand Yarn came out with their new eco-friendly recycled cotton yarn, Re-Up. This yarn is 85% recycled cotton and 15% polyester. Using just one skein of Re-Up Yarn saves 5,900 cups of water!

Not only is this yarn sustainable, but it is cheap! Check out these $2 skeins here and get a start on the perfect summer bag now. It also makes an awesome gift for the beach-lover in your life.

DESCRIPTION

This beach bag is made with single crochet stitches and bobble stitches worked in the round. The bobble stitches are scattered throughout to give it texture and pop. The adorable watermelon coloring comes from changing yarn colors throughout the pattern. This bag is large, ~15 inches across, and able to carry all your beach notions. For me, this always includes a book, my crochet work-in-progress, lots of snacks, and La Croix. What would you take with you for a day on the beach?

DIRECTIONS

FRONT SIDE

This bag is worked in the round with joining. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.

The bobbles are worked alternately and evenly around. Make sure that the single crochet stitch following each bobble stitch is extra tight to help the bobble stitch pop. You will not be increasing on the rounds with bobble stitches, just the rounds between.

Reminder: bobble stitches are worked on the “wrong side” – meaning they pop away from you as you work. You will consider the bobble-side the “right side” of this front piece.

Note: If your circle is not flat and is either buckling or bowing you will need to size your hook up or down accordingly until your circle stays flat.

Begin with Raspberry yarn

FRONT SIDE HANDLE

You will now be creating the separate chain strands that form the handle. In a later step you will be crocheting around these separate strands to form a thick and easy-to-hold handle.

Chain 35, skip 20 stitches, sl st into the 21st stitch. Turn, chain 35, skip 20 stitches, sl st into the 21st stitch. Turn, chain 35, skip 20 stitches and sl st into the 21st stitch. Turn once more, chain 35, skip 20 stitches and sl st into the 21st stitch. You how have 4 chain strands. Turn and single crochet around all four all the way along. Keep your stitches tight and bunched up so that no strands are visible underneath, sl st into the edge of the bag at the end of the strands. Fasten off and weave in ends.

BACK SIDE

This bag is worked in the round with joining. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.

The back side is the same pattern as the front side, but without any bobbles. In order to match the front side of the bag you will treat the wrong side as the right side.

ASSEMBLY

You will now single crochet the front and back sections of your bag together. Lay your front piece and back piece wrong sides together (remember that in this case the “right side” is the bobble side) with the bobble side on top and the handles lined up. Fasten on with lime yarn 12 stitches left of the handles, through both layers. Begin single crocheting down and around the entire bag until you reach 12 stitches away from the other side of the handles. Fasten off and weave in ends.

OPTIONAL SEEDS

Take short lengths of ecru or black yarn and tie them with double knots all around the front side of your watermelon bag. Cut them short and allow the ends to fray out.
