Spring is here and I am welcoming it with a sunflower-themed chalk bucket crochet pattern. Check out this little beauty!
So far, I have only designed patterns for chalk bags that are meant to hang from your waist. But, that’s all about to change! Presenting: the Sunflower Chalk Bucket! A chalk bucket that was created with boulderers in mind- you know, the climbers who don’t use ropes. I, myself, have been bouldering much more since moving to Bellingham, and I love it, but I needed a chalk bucket to match this new hobby. This little chalk bucket is meant to be a little sturdier, a little heavier, a little larger than my previous chalk bags. It sits upright, due to reinforcement from paracord, on it’s square base, and is just oh-so-cute and bright!
Not a climber? This little cutie makes a perfect yarn scrap basket or even a little bag! Cinch it up with a crocheted chain, instead of paracord, and you have yourself an adorable little bag!

DESCRIPTION
This little chalk bucket is made with a 5 inch by 5 inch square base. It’s sturdiness comes from crocheting over paracord around the base, a super simple technique that I outline below. Most of the sunflower is crocheted with the single crochet stitch, and I include a video for the petals, which are a little more tricky. Individual leaves are crocheted and then sewn around the base to give it more texture and pizzazz, and before you know it you’ll have a finished sunflower-shaped chalk bucket for getting out and climbing!

MATERIALS
- Worsted weight acrylic yarn, about 100 g of total yarn needed: I used Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice Yarn. The green base uses ~50 g of yarn, and less than 30 g of yarn are needed in brown and yellow.
- 5 mm Paracord– if you are going to use paracord to stiffen the base of your chalk bucket, you will only need ~5 yards of it. I used a 4 mm thick cord.
- Size H (5 mm) crochet hook
- Finishing needle
Chalk Bag Fabric Liner and Pull Cord Materials (Click here to receive your free PDF tutorial on how to add a fabric liner and pull cord to your chalk bag):
- 14 inches of paracord
- Toggle stopper
- Lightweight fabric liner (<1 square yard)
- Refillable chalk ball
- Eyelet or grommet

DIRECTIONS
STEM
The bag’s square base is worked flat. You will end up with a 5 inch by 5 inch base, If you would like a smaller or larger Sunflower Bucket, then decrease or increase your starting chains and crochet until you have an even square.
After you complete the base you will begin crocheting in the round, around the perimeter with no chaining or slip stitching at the beginning and end of rows. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rows. You will also be crocheting around paracord starting on row 3 (example video below) to give your bucket sturdy sides that will keep it upright on the mat or wherever you choose to use your chalk bucket.
Begin with your size H (5 mm) crochet hook and green worsted weight yarn.
ch 18.
(Wondering what the checkboxes are for? Check out this tutorial and make online patterns easier to follow!)
Do not fasten off. You will now be crocheting in the round, around the perimeter of your square. Each side will have 18 stitches for a total of 72 st. Make sure you mark your first stitch with a stitch marker because you will be crocheting in the round with no chaining, slip stitching, or stopping.
You will now crochet around paracord to create a stiff chalk bucket that can stand up on its own. Keep your paracord tension high so that your chalk bag does not gape open.
Switch to brown yarn.
Finish off and weave in ends.
PETALS
With yellow yarn, fasten on to the front loops (outer loops) left from Row 18.
Fasten off and weave in ends
LEAVES (MAKE 6)
I love this leaf pattern from Repeat Crafter Me and used it in my pattern. You can create any number of leaves and arrange them however you would like around your green base!
Begin with green yarn.
Chain 6. sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next two ch, 6dc in last ch. Working down the backside of the ch, dc in next two ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, ch 2 and make a sc in second chain from hook, join to first sc.
Finish off and leave ends long for sewing
ASSEMBLY
Sew the leaves evenly around the base of your chalk bucket and add in a fabric liner and pull cord.
Your chalk bucket is ready for spring! Get out and climb!
