Last month, I stumbled upon some adorable cupcake-flannel fabric while rummaging through the JOANN’s remnant fabric bins (who doesn’t head straight there?!). I decided immediately that I would need to crochet a matching cupcake chalk bag so that I could use this precious fabric as the liner. And here we are! More food related chalk bags. I just can’t get enough. It feels like I may need to devote my entire blog to food shaped chalk bags – is that too niche?? I think it would bring me joy, and since I have been Marie Kondo-ing my way through our home, my ability to sense what sparks joy is at an all time high and I’m going with it!
In my pattern below, I may say that the red cherry topper is optional, but is it really? I just think it adds that necessary superfluousness that all my designs – especially my chalk bags- tend to have. Just that extra jazz on top – the cherry on top! See? It’s settled. Make the cherry and you won’t be disappointed.
Not a climber? Here are some ways you can still use this pattern:
-yarn ball cozy or yarn bowl
-plant pot cozy
-scrap yarn basket
-child’s purse
-dog treat bag
-Anything else you can think of!

DESCRIPTION
This cupcake is one chalk bag that no one will be expecting! It comes out to ~5 inches across and ~6 inches tall; and though little, packs a punch of cuteness. Add a cherry on top and customize your sprinkles to your favorite flavors. I used Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice Yarn, but any worsted weight acrylic yarn will work. Plus the whole chalk bag uses less than 100 grams of yarn, so you can clear out those scraps and leftovers – my absolute favorite part of any new project! This pattern has some intermediate techniques, such as front post double crochet and crocheting in the front and back loops only; but have no fear! I have included photos and tutorials to help you through the tricky parts. I believe in you! Besides, the cupcake is too cute to not give a whirl.

DIRECTIONS
This piece is started in the round with joining and no turning. To achieve an invisible and straight seam, work your first stitch of the next round into the same stitch as your chain and end the round slip stitching into the first stitch of the previous round.
Begin with your size H (5 mm) crochet hook and tan worsted weight yarn.
Here you can see, I have completed my chalk bag’s round base and am beginning to fpdc around to form the ridges. (fpdc tutorial)
Magic Circle
(Wondering what the checkboxes are for? Check out this tutorial and make online patterns easier to follow!)
Do not fasten off, switch to white yarn.
Pictured here, I am halfway through row 18; single crocheting in the back loops only of the same row as the scallops that are in the front loops only. The next row will build off of this row and the scalloped edge will stay sticking out horizontally.
Finish off and weave in ends.
SPRINKLES
Use a yarn needle and pink scraps of yarn to sew pink sprinkles around upper, white icing part of your chalk bag. Go crazy with your sprinkles and add in all kind of yarn scrap colors or stick with one type – the choice is yours! Make sure to tie them off tightly on the inside and weave in the ends so you do not lose them while climbing.
OPTIONAL CHERRY TOPPER (BUT, I MEAN, IS IT REALLY OPTIONAL?!)
Begin with your size H (5 mm) crochet hook and red worsted weight yarn.
Magic Circle
Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff firmly with fiberfill and cinch closed with tail. Sew your cherry to the top edge, when you cinch your chalk bag closed it will be left on top!
ASSEMBLY

Since this chalk bag looks best when closed along the top row, I threaded a length of ~10 inch long paracord through the stitches of the last row and added a toggle to pull it closed. When following the fabric liner sewing tutorial, you can then skip the last pull cord and toggle step.
Loop the yard of paracord through the weave of your chalk bag at the back and tie around your waist. Cut down to proper length.
Your chalk bag is complete! Get out and climb!
