For this pattern, I was inspired to re-purpose an old pair of jeans and upcycle them – something I have been meaning to try for a while.
Though it may be past “spring cleaning” season, I am still getting rid of winter clothes and had a pair of jeans lying around that I was no longer wearing. I made a chalk bag with this pair, but jeans yarn can be crocheted into anything you can think of!

I finished this baby up last night and I had a chance to take it for a spin at the gym! Sturdy, but lightweight, it worked flawlessly and is such a unique look. I loved reusing the old jeans and getting to put new life into something recycled – other people noticed as well and I always get so many comments on this chalk bag. The light wash is so cute, but I just might make another chalk bag with a darker wash and see how the contrast with the inner fabric looks.

DIRECTIONS
JEAN YARN STRIPS
To create your blue jean yarn you will need an old pair of jeans and very sharp fabric scissors. It is much easier to crochet with the jean yarn strips if the pants were a bit stretchy to start with. Depending on the size of your pant leg, you may only need to only cut up one of the legs.
Cut the hem off of the bottom of the pant leg and remove the pant leg from the rest of the pants as high up as possible.
Start a spiraling cut at the bottom of the pant leg. Keep the strip at one centimeter thick, or the width of a finger. Do not worry too much about keeping the strip even, the chunkiness will give your work character and a unique feel!
Continue spiraling up the pant leg until you run out of material. Repeat with the second leg if your jeans are smaller or you want to make a second chalk bag. You’re now ready to crochet!
P.S. A chalk bag isn’t the only thing you can crochet with jeans yarn! What about a yarn basket or rug?!
