CHACO PONCHO PATTERN

The Chaco Poncho can be worn in so many ways and is flattering on everyone. Add stripes and an edging detail, or keep it simple and elegant.

I was inspired by a recent trip to Chaco Canyon in Chaco Culture National Historical Park to name this poncho after this gorgeous, but enigmatic place and people.

The corner to corner stitch (C2C) works up quickly and is a fun stitch for larger projects like this poncho. First time using this technique? Do not worry! I have lots of resources for crocheters new to the C2C stitch like my photo tutorial and Youtube video. This is an especially great project for beginner C2C enthusiasts as there is no color work – one thing that can really complicate this stitch. DESCRIPTION

One size fits all! Throw it on over a pair of jeans, skirt, or dress. Can be worn 6 ways – or possibly more? Get creative with this poncho/scarf/shirt/ shawl. Once assembled, the poncho is ~24 inches by ~30 inches and SO warm and cozy!

MATERIALS

Lion Brand Yarn Color Made Easy Yarn (Weight: 5/chunky – 200 g, 7 oz) 4 skeins needed
Size K (6.5 mm) crochet hook
Finishing needle

I used Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy Yarn in Pomegranate for my Chaco Poncho, but I think this garment would be beautiful in either of Lion Brand’s other new yarns: the Vel-Luxe Yarn and Go For Faux Yarn! Both would work up beautifully in the corner to corner style AND, pro tip: because you always double crochet in a chain space, when C2C crocheting, it makes all fuzzy yarn easier to use. It can be difficult to see your stitches when using faux fur and velvety yarns, but you don’t have to worry about that with this stitch technique! Still not convinced? You are creating a rectangle ~24 inches by ~60 inches with the C2C technique.

ch 6

Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch. turn. 1 block made.
Row 2: ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) all in ch-3 space of previous row. turn. 2 blocks made.
Row 3: ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) all in next ch-3 space of previous row. Repeat in next ch-3 space. turn. 3 blocks made.
Row 4: ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) all in next ch-3 space of previous row. Repeat in next 2 ch-3 spaces. turn. 4 blocks made.
Row 5-22: Continue increasing until Row 22, you will have will have 22 blocks diagonally across your work. Each row will create one more block diagonally when increasing.

You will now start forming the rectangular shape by decreasing on one end of each row and continuing to increase on the other end. As you work more rows you will be able to see the rectangle form and it becomes easier to recognize the pattern. Every row will have 22 blocks diagonally across the row.

Row 23: sl st across first 3 dc, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) all in next ch-3 space of previous row. Repeat in all ch-3 spaces across row. 22 blocks made.
Row 24: ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch, (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) all in next ch-3 space of previous row. Repeat to last ch-3 space, slip st in last space. turn, do NOT make a block in last space. 22 blocks made.
Row 25- 52: Repeat Rows 23 and 24.

Never want to miss another pattern?

Now that the rectangle is as long as we would like, we will finish off the piece by decreasing on both ends of each row until we are back to one block.

Row 53: sl st across first 3 dc, (slip st, ch 3, 3 dc) all in next ch-3 space of previous row. Repeat to last ch-3 space, slip st in last space. turn, do NOT make a block in last space. 21 blocks made.
Row 54-73: Repeat Row 53 until there is one block remaining and you have closed the rectangle, each row will decrease the number of blocks diagonally by one.

ASSEMBLY

Fold your rectangle in half, long-ways. You will now use leftover yarn to sew one of the long sides closed, but will leave a ~12 inch gap at the fold. The other sides stay open.

Sew one side of the poncho closed, but leave a ~12 inch gap. This gap is what your head will go through, so if it feels a little too big or small, adjust the size once you try it on.

And you are finished! It is that simple! I found at least 6 ways to wear the poncho that I highlight below, but I bet you can find even more. It is SUCH a fun versatile piece of clothing and perfect for layering in the winter. Plus that corner to corner stitch looks gorgeous in this chunky yarn and rich color.
