FRANCES SKIRT PATTERN

This high-waisted fall skirt is just begging to get on your hook and out in the world!

The Frances Skirt sits high on the waist and can be worn with or without leggings, taking us right into the fall and colder weather! It is incredibly comfy to wear and so easy to make. The sizing is easy to adjust to your exact waist and the yarn, Vanna’s Choice Lion Brand Yarn, is squishy and stretchy but will hold up to wear and washing. All around, it’s the perfect fall skirt to get in the mood for rainy days and chilly nights.

Model is 5’9″ and size 6 and is wearing the Frances Skirt in size medium.

I just love this rust color for fall! It goes with everything and the dark golden color is gorgeous. I had a blast designing this skirt and especially love the detailing of the buttons on the side and the picots on the hemline. It is very doable pattern for a beginner and perfect for anyone, whether you’re making your first crocheted garment or your tenth!

Crocheting outside overlooking the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park in Squamish, BC. #WildYarning

I had the pleasure of working most of this skirt up with this incredible view of The Stawamus Chief in Squamish, BC. Talk about inspiration! This is my favorite environment to crochet in; good friends and good views. What could be better?

DESCRIPTION

This high-waisted fall skirt comes in three sizes, but is easily adjustable to your unique size. It sits high on the waist and is so flattering to all body types! The skirt comes down half-way between the waist and knee, but can be easily lengthened or shortened for comfort.

MATERIALS

ABBREVIATIONS

  • ch: chain
  • st: stitch
  • sl: slip stitch
  • sk: skip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • flo: front loops only (tutorial)
  • p: picot 4 (tutorial)

DIRECTIONS

Sizing: Unstretched and laid flat, the ribbed waistline of the large sized skirt is ~36 inches, the medium is ~32 inches, and the small is ~28 inches. The skirt then flares and the hemline of the large, not overlapped, is ~50 inches, the medium is ~45 inches, and the small is ~40 inches. Remember that this yarn is very stretchy and the ribbed waistline will stretch immensely! You can also always overlap a little more or less to get your exact size.

WAISTLINE

This piece is worked flat. Once finished, check the waistline against your own true waist (higher than your hips). It should fit snug, as the yarn has a lot of stretch, and also be able to overlap ~2 inches. At this step you can easily customize the band to fit your waist and then work from there. Just crochet until it fits comfortably and count your rows for the next step, that will determine how many stitches your main skirt will start with. Check the materials list for how many skeins of Vanna’s Choice Lion Brand Yarn you will need.

Size Small (26″):

Size Medium (28″-30″):

Size Large (32″-34″):

Do not fasten off. You will now turn and work across the long side of your waistline and finish the main part of the skirt.

MAIN SKIRT

Sizes are listed in parentheses from small, medium, large. The piece is worked flat and will be sewn together in a circle during assembly. If you did not follow the sizes above, do not fear! Your first row will have as many stitches across as rows you crocheted. Continue to follow the pattern, supplementing your initial stitch count for the ones listed in parentheses.

ASSEMBLY

Overlap the skirt, buttonhole side on top, by ~2 inches (adjust to your waist if this is too large or small by overlapping more or less) and sew the waistline together at the overlap, leaving the main skirt section unattached. This step is to make sure the waist stays in place and does not bunch. You will slip the skirt on over your waist, but the buttons are still functional for keeping the skirt closed.

Line up the two sides and sew on three one-inch buttons to the bottom skirt layer, directly underneath the button holes. Make sure the skirt lays comfortably when you button the buttons.

I wear my skirt with the buttons on the side, but you may way to change it up and put them in the front!

  1. This is adorable!! Would you give us the unstretched finished measurements of the skirt you made so we can figure what size we would want to make for ourselves or others? Thanks

    1. Hello Darla! Unstretched and not overlapped, the ribbing waistline of the large is ~36 inches, the medium is ~32 inches, and the small is ~28 inches. The skirt then flares and the hemline of the large, not overlapped is ~50 inches, the medium is ~45 inches, and the small is ~40 inches. I will update the pattern as well. Thank you for clarifying! And I do want to emphasize how much that ribbing will stretch! it is easy to customize at the overlap step though 🙂

Let me know what you think!
