I managed to plan out this design and get a start on crocheting this newest creation during our climbing trip this past week in the Sawtooth Wilderness. Rest days and evenings can be productive too! Being out in the incredible scenery and sitting next to an alpine lake is a wonderful place to find renewed creativity.
I had a vision of a lightweight, see-through wall hanging that would reflect the incredible sunsets over the ocean we see from our home in the PNW. I also had a lovely piece of driftwood I wanted to use that I had scavenged off a beach in Oregon. You can find a stick near you, or visit a craft store to find dowels or even spindles for your hanging!
The Lion Brand Cupcake yarn creates a gorgeous color transition and the collected driftwood hanger adds an earthy feel. This pattern uses one skein of yarn and works up in a day or two, plus you only need to know how to double crochet!
Have a big blank space lacking color? Add some vibrancy to your home! I found the perfect place to hang ours. Framed by our white curtains and catching the light from our west-facing window all day and evening- too perfect.

DESCRIPTION
This wall hanging is roughly ten inches wide and a foot and a half long. It uses one skein of Lion Brand, color-changing, Cupcake yarn and only double crochet and chain stitches. Hang on your wall or in front of a window to see the colors light up.
MATERIALS
- Lion Brand Cupcake Yarn (Weight: 3/light – 590 yds, 5.3 oz) Uses less than one skein – color transitions were cut short to get more colors into my hanging, this is optional.
- Size I (8 mm) crochet hook
- Stitch marker (I often use a safety pin, but these are so cute!)
- 12-inch long hanger (collected driftwood or dowel)
ABBREVIATIONS
ch: chain
st: stitch
sp: space
sk: skip stitch
dc: double crochet
dc2tog: double crochet two stitches together.
DIRECTIONS
*Pattern directions and photos updated 12/31/20*
The chevron shape of the cowl is created by increasing in the middle stitch every row and decreasing on the ends. Every third row is an “window” row with openings made by chaining and skipping stitches. The wall hanging is roughly ten inches across and 20 inches long. Because the wall hanging uses less than the whole self-striping yarn skein, I cut the yarn in places to make the color change happen faster. Chains at beginning of rows don’t count as stitches.
Chain: 53 (place st marker on middle st; 27th st from hook)

Finish off and weave in ends.
Note: If your wall hanging is curling at all, this is the time to block it, before moving on to the hanging step. What is blocking? It is simply wetting your piece and pinning it flat so it dries in the shape you wish. It works wonders on unruly makes.
ADD TASSELS TO THE BOTTOM EDGE
For each tassel, cut four lengths of ten inch long yarn. There will be seven of them that you will then attach to bottom of hanging.
SECURE WALL HANGING TO HANGER
Sew the wall hanging to the driftwood at each corner by hooking yarn through the work and around the stick. Attach yarn at each corner and tie in the middle above the wall hanging to create an attachment point for your hanging.
Hang your new work on a window or a hook on the wall and you are finished!

Hello Rica, Cupcake yarn is a category 3, light weight yarn. Anything in the category, acrylic or natural fiber, will work!
Thanks so much. Cheers!
